What is Journey to Freedom?

Journey to Freedom is a program developed by the YMCA of Middle Tennessee to help people overcome life-controlling obstacles to create a better life. Journey to Freedom takes people who have had trouble growing emotionally, physically and spiritually and gives them the tools to create permanent, effective change.

In the 8-week course, Journey to Freedom takes 8-10 people and puts them in a group. This group meets once a week to go through the Journey to Freedom workbook. This is where they find a safe place to share their struggles and life-challenges, learn that they are not alone, and create an action plan based on their new vision for their life. Journey to Freedom is for anyone and everyone---from addicts to those who just know they want a change.
Why does your YMCA need Journey to Freedom?

As you implement Journey to Freedom in your YMCA, the community you serve will begin to have a different perception of your Y. They will no longer see it as just a place to work out, but a place where a person’s entire life can change. They will begin to trust the Y for the support, encouragement, and accountability they need to change any life-controlling issue they may be struggling with.

Journey to Freedom cultivates new members, especially members who may be intimidated or at a high risk to drop out.

Not only will Journey to Freedom draw new members; it will help retain current members because of the intimate relationships that your staff will create with them.

Journey to Freedom participants will bring you great stories and testimonies for your development and fundraising efforts.

The moral of your staff will be positively influenced through Journey to Freedom. Your staff will feel like they are making a difference in the lives of people daily as they promote complete wellness in the areas of spirit, mind, and body. This will improve employee retention and reduce your turnover rates.

Journey to Freedom helps bridge the gap between departments in your YMCA. Because Journey to Freedom is not a department specific program your teams will begin to unite.

Journey to Freedom builds relationships between your YMCA and area churches, therapists, and doctors. It connects the whole community with the YMCA because those professionals will refer participants to you.
Why Does Your Church Need Journey to Freedom?

Studies have found that as many as 80% of the people who walk through the doors of the local church suffer in the areas of depression, self-esteem, anger, weight-loss, addictions, fear and grief, just to name a few. Most churches are not equipped to meet the needs of their members—until now.

Journey to Freedom’s Christ-based message is that everyone needs help and no one is immune to life’s challenges. Participants will learn that it is okay to be vulnerable, open, and trusting—in this way your congregation will strengthen from the inside out.

Journey to Freedom’s mission is to partner with area churches to build a community that God will use to bring hope and healing not only to the church, but also to the community at large.

Listen to what our church partners have to say:

“I know that many people in our society, even people in the church, deal with crippling emotional and psychological issues everyday that I very simply am not trained to handle appropriately. It is very reassuring for me to know that our church is partnered with a Christian ministry that can meet these very complex needs through appropriate counseling and biblical encouragement when they arise in our church.”
- Lance Wamble St. Paul Community Church

“Restore offers an invaluable setting for people who want to grow or make progress or deal with difficult issues in their lives. It emphasizes wholeness in a solidly spiritual and winsomely Christian context. Members from our parish have been helped deeply and practically through their participation. It can wonderfully complement a congregation’s ongoing programs and ministries.”
- Reverend Timothy Jones St. George’s Episcopal Church
